Learning Communities

“Learning Communities” is a development model guideline commissioned by the Chicago Housing Authority as part of its ongoing Plan for Transformation. Since the early 1980s, the CHA properties have developed into areas of high and endemic concentrations of poverty and neglected infrastructure. This dual economical and physical deterioration is a fertile social background in which second generation of low income residents follow a path of long term dependence on government subsidy. Learning Communities is a planning methodology designed to create and sustain a culture committed to education. A Learning Community environment will use education as a catalyst to coalesce mixed income residential and social infrastructure uses and create a knowledge rich campus. Core academics will be reinforced by nutrition, personal finance, and the arts using public and corporate support.
