HOUSE OF HUNGARIAN MUSIC

We imagine the new House of Hungarian Music as a vital yet subdued organ of the Budapest City Park. While its location in the Park’s Master Plan, on axis with Varosligeti fasor and framed by the upcoming Budapest Foto Museum and the Hungarian Museum of Architecture, may lend thoughts of a building in contrast with its surroundings screaming for attention through powerful visuals, we envision a building that pays homage to its surroundings, bends its form around the existing trees, and invites the wind to stroke its sinuous surface. This is a building in the park that surprises the passerby, provokes a smile, and extends an invitation to explore.

The building’s footprint is subdued, part of a web of non-hierarchical pedestrian paths that wonder from one tree to another. Instead of leading the visitor, the paths provide an opportunity to explore the natural surroundings and to glance at people around you. We have designed the House of Music as a building that wants to be discovered, a music box in the foliage.
