One Village India

One Village is an educational village model conceived to serve the rural population in India. It is a carbon neutral development that has the ability to produce its own energy, therefore eliminating the emissions of greenhouse gases while promoting self-sustainability.

The motivation behind this type of development is to provide innovative economic opportunities in rural India that were previously unavailable. Large urban centers are perceived to be the only avenue to prosperity, but many young people who flock to these areas in search of a better life are met with disappointment. What they encounter are slums, unemployment and poverty.

Each Village will have a circular formation, with the diameter of the circle being dependent on the population of each individual location. The program of a typical village includes K-12 learning environments, vocational training, workshops, residences, agricultural land, sports and a market. The market will sell produce and products developed by the students of the village. The market will also provide a stepping stone to help the graduates establish themselves as entrepreneurs in the area where they are born; increasing the appeal of staying close to family and away from large urban centers.

STL goes to pre-school!

STL team members Pepe, Ben and Dorota had the wonderful opportunity to spend half a day at a pre-school in Evanston as special guests for Community Helpers Week.

The theme for the day was Building and Construction. In all honesty, it is a little more nerve -wrecking to talk to 3,4 and 5 year olds then it is to potential client. The little ones will tell you if you are boring straight to your face.

IASBO 2009

STL made its debut at the 77th Joint Annual Conference IASB | IASA | IASBO. School board members, administrators and business officials from all over Illinois met to explore and learn about different school products and services. In keeping with the theme ‘Lighting the Way’ STL designed a booth installation composed entirely of white acrylic cubes. Our booth illuminated an otherwise mute exhibit space.

Orange Man also made his debut at this conference. The name says it all. He is a man. He is orange. And he generated an air of curiosity and wonder as he interacted silently with conference goers.

Housing Alternatives in Chicago

STL recently had the opportunity to design an alternative to collective residential living in Chicago. For this effort, STL applied two distinct and separate approaches to the design of an energy-efficient building. The first strategy incorporates passive design principles that have been employed since the first human shelters were built reliant primarily on site location and climate parameters (latitude, temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation). As a counterpoint to this approach a second strategy was proposed which relied on technologies available today to capitalize on the ability of the building to produce energy on site (photo-voltaic surfaces, wind turbines, etc) while micromanaging its use with advanced digital Building Automation Systems.

STL's Website after Sixteen Months

On September of 2004 STL launched a brand new website. Sixteen months have passed and in that time we have been lucky to enjoy the contributions of an incredible group of professionals. Their creativity, diligence and expertise together with the versatility of our content management system, Movable Type, have provided us with a unique window to the Web. STL would like to thank all who, in way or another, have contributed to the creation, development and maintenance of the website over the past 16 months. Special thanks go to Mari Takanashi, Sarah Kim, Dave Hampton and particularly Ben Gauslin who suggested, created, wrote, fixed, migrated, and maintained our site.

Residential Loft in Chicago

Through this new project STL is exploring the residential loft typology in Chicago. The 2-level, 5,000 SF loft will incorporate the use of corrugated Corten steel and dark stained oak throughout. While the lower level articulates the client’s key programmatic requirements the upper level features an outdoor deck, a green house and an exercise room. Taking advantage of the magnificent existing north, west and south views of Chicago, this open plan loft space also hosts an extensive art collection organized around the flexible, multiuse space in the lower level.
